Travel tips for summer holidays on the Aeolian Islands off Sicily

This travel tip is based on a FB request that I think was very exciting. Exploring the Aeolian Islands in Italy is a fantastic holiday plan!

This is what Wikipedia says:

The Aeolian Islands or Aeolian Islands (also "The Aeolian Islands") (Italian: Isole Eolie) is a group of volcanic islands in the province Messina in the region Sicily in Italy. Geographically, they are located in the Tyrrhenian Sea just north of Sicily's northeastern coast. The archipelago consists of 7 inhabited islands and some smaller uninhabited ones. In total, the islands make up approximately 115 km², but only 20 km² have built-up areas. The most populated islands have well-developed infrastructure, while the smaller and more remote ones like Alicudi have no car traffic, and only got electricity in the 1990s.

Aeolian Islands

Here are my tips and suggestions for itineraries, cities and places of residence that may be of interest to you:

Itinerary:

  • A possible itinerary could be to start in Catania in Sicily, take a ferry to the island of Lipari, and then visit the other islands of the Aeolian Islands - Salina, Stromboli, Vulcano, Panarea and Filicudi. You can end the trip by taking a ferry back to Sicily.

Cities and residences:

Lipari:

  • This is the largest island in the Aeolian Islands and a great place to stay. The town of Lipari has a charming old town, a fortress and an archaeological museum. There are also many beautiful beaches around the island such as Canneto, Spiaggia Bianca and Valle Muria.

Salina:

  • This is the greenest island in the Aeolian Islands and a great place for relaxation and scenic surroundings. You can stay in the town of Santa Marina Salina, which has a nice beach and good restaurants.

Stromboli:

  • This is the only active volcano in the Aeolian Islands, and a trip to the top is an experience you don't want to miss. You can stay in the town of Stromboli, which has a small port, nice restaurants and beautiful beaches.

Vulcano:

  • This island is famous for its volcanic hot springs and mud baths, and taking a bath here is a great experience. You can stay in the town of Vulcano Porto, which has a nice beach and good restaurants.

Panarea:

  • This is the smallest island in the Aeolian Islands and a great place to enjoy the glamorous life. You can stay in the town of San Pietro, which has beautiful villas, trendy restaurants and beautiful beaches.

Filicudi:

  • This is a peaceful island with beautiful beaches and cliffs. You can stay in the town of Filicudi Porto, which has a small harbour, nice restaurants and great places for snorkelling.

Accommodation:

There are many options for accommodation on the Aeolian Islands. You can find everything from simple apartments to luxurious hotels. Here are some suggestions for accommodation that may be of interest:

Hotel Cutimare on Lipari

  • This is a great hotel in a fantastic location close to the beach and the harbour.

Hotel Santa Isabel at Salina

  • This is a charming hotel with a great location close to the beach and good restaurants.

Hotel La Sciara on Stromboli:

  • This is a great hotel with a fantastic view of the volcano and the sea.
