Travel tips Tønsberg, - Norway's oldest city!

Tønsberg is considered one of Norway's oldest cities, mem is one of Norway's most exciting summer cities in the east. Tønsberg has roots going back to the Viking Age and the early Middle Ages. Archaeological finds show that there has been activity in the area already over 1,000 years ago.

In the saga literature from 871, Tønsberg is mentioned as one of the most important places in Vestfold, and the town was a central power factor in the region in the Middle Ages. In 1201, the town was mentioned as Tunsberg in a papal letter, and in 1241 Tønsberg was granted city status by King Håkon Håkonsson. Tønsberg was an important trading town in the Middle Ages, and had contact with the Hanseatic League and other European trading centres. The town was also an ecclesiastical center, and in the 12th century, Tønsberg Cathedral was built. Tønsberg was also an important political meeting place, and several kings and queens have visited the city over the years. In 1814, Tønsberg was one of the towns that received representation at the Eidsvoll Assembly and thus helped shape Norway's constitution. During the 19th century, Tønsberg became an important maritime town, and several shipyards and shipping companies were established in the town. Today, Tønsberg is a modern city with a long and rich history. The city has a number of cultural offerings and attractions, such as the Castle Mountain Museum, Tønsberg Cathedral and Tønsberg Brygge. Tønsberg is also known for its vibrant nightlife and is a popular destination for both. Tønsberg has several attractions and cultural offerings that are worth visiting.
